Drastically improve skills as a movement expert by targeting inputs

If you are a well practiced personal trainer, coach or therapist it’s likely that you are a proprioception expert! Meaning, you teach people how to move more efficiently!

Movement is an example of an “output.” So you could say that squats, lunges, pull ups or any exercise for that matter could classify as an output.

An input could be simply described as the information that our brains sensory systems collect. This information is interpreted by the nervous system and a decision is made on what to do with it. The result is the output!

Did you know that the quality of the input determines the quality of the output?

This is why as movement professionals if we want to be at the top of our field, we can’t just stop at proprioception! We need to know how to improve the quality of the input in order to change the output. Because remember, squats, lunges and pull ups (anything) are brain based activities!

Trying to improve someone’s squat by using the squat is an example of using an output to try and correct output. But what if the reason for the faulty squat is poor sensory information coming in? - A vision problem, a peripheral nerve problem, a vestibular problem, etc. Then that squat might not ever be as good as you want it to be!
